FAN CLUB NEWSLETTERS  -  1975 AUGUST - DECEMBER
Carpenters Fan Club Newsletter #44 - August, 1975

Hi Fans!

As we reach half time of summer vacations, Carpenters and staff wish you all a pleasant and safe one.

We extend gratitude for the numerous expressions or appreciation for the new album Horizon, which was shipped GOLD. Solitaire was released Friday, July 18th and we hope it follows suit.

Richard has decided against making a 'live' U.S. album, as most of the songs they do in concert are already on albums. Some are on two, such as The Singles, and he felt a third time around was a bit much.

We have some tour news, starting at the municipal Auditorium in Sioux City, Iowa. They had played there three years prior, and recalled with delight the concert they performed then with the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra.

Steve Martin, a relatively new comic, opened the show by playing a 5 string banjo and doing a hilarious comedy act.

Their next stop was the Civic Arena in Bismarck, South Dakota. Two year prior (on their first appearance there) the Carpenters were the second show to be booked there. Lawrence Welk was first. Their stay at the brand new Kirkwood Motor Inn was a very pleasant one with a very nice atmosphere.

In Jamestown, North Dakota, the concert had been sold out in advance. Although the weather was chilly, the audience was warm and receptive, giving a standing ovation.

The sound system in the arena at Duluth, Minnesota was a rare treat, and they managed to work in a second show. Dinner was sent in for the group between shows.

Richard & Karen were very impressed by the new Marquette Inn that was home to them May 17th. Richard described it as a super modern high rise. The hotel lobby located on the third floor, was beautifully decorated with red wallpaper, black furniture and white lamps etc. The Minneapolis Orchestra Hall was an elegant theater, and Richard was intrigued with the acoustics, he said the piano was as terrific as the audience.

The next day they hit four states and five cities. Here's how: From Minneapolis, Minnesota where they stayed overnight, flew to Chicago, Illinois and from there drove to South Bend, Indiana where they did a quick sound check at the theater, then on to the Royale Inn where they had day rooms to eat, shower and change clothes. Back to the theater to stage their show, after which everyone helped to break stage and pack in record time. They drove back to Chicago, where they boarded a plane to New York, NY. From there they hit the trail for Rye Town, Westchester county, where the weary travelers bed down at the Rye Town Hilton. They placed a big stamp of approval on the Premier Theater which Richard described as being like a theater-in-the-round cut in hair, and stage access was excellent. All shows went well, and WNBC TV came in to tape their performance of Top Of The World which they aired later on the local t.v. news.

The weather was so good, they held baseball practice, then went to a nearby ice cream parlor, and indulged in gourmet banana splits. They soon discovered practice was sorely needed. Skiles, Henderson, Strawn & Woodham were so far, their best players. The rest of the group were rather out of shape. Gene, a hotel security guard, offered to get a team together to play against the Carpenters. WHAT friends they turned out to be: All giants, and all state champions: First up they really creamed the Carpenters with a 6-0 score. The group felt better by the second game when 'the giants' lost to them 14-10.

When Karen found she had been assigned the 3 room Presidential Suite at the Hilton, she told the hotel manager she didn't need that much room, and would be happy with just the bedroom section, so they rented the living room section to a very nice business gentleman, but failed to advise Karen. Imagine her surprise and embarrassment when later that evening, she entered the suite via the living room and found it occupied!

A very unusual and edible gift was presented to Richard and Karen by Gale O'Mally, chief pastry maker at the Hilton. He created a beautiful grand piano and drum set of peanut brittle. The piano keyboard was made of marzipan and chocolate. Inside the piano lay a luscious bed of strawberries, coated with clear sugar glaze. The cymbals and the peg to drop open the piano were also made of chocolate. It looked too good to eat, but they enjoyed the beauty of it as long as they could before it began to melt, and they were forced to eat it.

The Riviera, Las Vegas was jammed with Carpenters freaks every night, and the shows went exceptionally well. The very talented Jose Feliciano had the opening spot which complemented the Carpenters show beautifully.

Richard had bought a new Cadillac Eldorado just prior to the Las Vegas gig, so he enjoyed driving it up there, being careful to use the cruise control to ensure he didn't exceed the 55 mph speed limit, consequently it took five hours to drive from Downey to Las Vegas.

He and Karen had the use of a lovely modern house there, with a pool and Jacuzzi for relaxation between shows. A pool in the middle of the desert with blazing 100 plus temperatures was a god-send indeed.

NOTE TO CHICAGO AREA FANS: An extra day has been added to the schedule at the Ravinia. Carpenters concerts will be staged August 12th and 13th.

I have room for a brief question and answer session listed below.

Q: When did Richard first start to wear glasses?
A: At age 12.
Q: In the centerfold picture of the new program book, do the two dogs belong to Karen?
A: No. They belong to the photographer.
Q: When Richard & John Bettis write a song, do they write the music or the lyrics first?
A: Sometimes John writes the lyrics to Richard's music, and sometimes Richard applies his music to John's lyrics.
Q: What is Richard's voice range?
A: Low A for two octaves.
Q: What is Karen's voice range?
A: D below middle C to C above high C.
Q: Who is Ron Gorow who is frequently credited on Carpenters albums?
A: Ron is Richard's copyist. He places the music notes on paper as Richard plays them.
Q: How tall are Richard and Karen? What color hair and eyes?
A: Richard - 6ft. Hazel eyes, light brown hair. Karen - 5ft. 4 1/2". Brown eyes and brown hair.
Q: Do the Carpenters receive free copies of newspapers and magazines in which their pictures appear?
A: No. In fact many times they are unaware of various articles and picture until a friend advises them, or until they receive a clipping from a fan, which prompts me to take this opportunity to thank you all for them, all such data is placed in the Carpenters 'Book Of Memories'.

Carpenters Fan Club Newsletter #45 - October, 1975

Hi Fan!

The following is a statement from Richard concerning the Neil Sedaka/Las Vegas affair: "When the Carpenters play concerts, they invite someone to be their opening act. In the case of our last summer tour and Las Vegas engagements, we asked Neil Sedaka to open the show. It often happens in our business, not only with the Carpenters, but also with other headliners, that the choice of the opening act proves to be unsuitable for personal, or other reasons. Under those circumstances, the headliner has no option but to terminate the engagement of the opener. This was the situation with Neil.

Please be assured that we DID NOT fire Neil Sedaka for doing too well. In fact we were delighted that he was receiving a nice response from the audience. It was a result or other circumstances of which he is totally aware that made it necessary for us to terminate his engagement. Since he has full knowledge of all the background acts, it is a disappointment to us that he had found it necessary to make statements concerning same to the press. Personally, the Las Vegas/Sedaka issue is an old matter, and right now I am much more concerned with Karen's health, and writing new songs".

Carpenters send sincere regrets to their loyal fans in Japan for the cancellation or the Japanese tour due to Karen's illness. She appreciates your sympathetic understanding, and deep concern for her health. She is very slowly improving, but has been prohibited by her physicians from all physical and professional activities until the end of October.

Richard flew to Japan with Terry Ellis (Karen's boyfriend) for a Press conference and business meeting with the Japanese promoters. And Richard made a public announcement to the people of Japan. They hope to return next Spring.

Many thanks from Karen for the numerous get well cards, and from Richard for the lovely birthday cards.

We now have in stock some brand new Carpenters keepsakes, and have new prices for some of the old items.

The baseball game scheduled for Japan was rained out. Richard, supported by King Records personnel, planned to play against local D.Js, but a downpour benched his good intentions. Of the six games played state-side, the Carpenters won all but one. They lost the first game to the Pine Knob all Stars 21-18. In Hartford, Connecticut they were the victors when they played Channel 3 TV celebrities. The score 20-2. Games 3 and 4 were played in Warwick, Rhode Island. Carpenters won the first game 15-13 in 9 innings against WPRO Radio celebrities Pro team. Determined to beat the Carpenters, Warwick fortified their team by adding former professional ball players, and challenged them to a second game which was played in 105 degree heat. At the end of the first inning, Carpenters had already scored 5-0. On Warwick's last up, with two outs, Richard went back into the outfield and made a lucky crazy catch which was a fluke, but resulted in another score for the Carpenters 19-11.

Garden State was also host for two games. The first was played against Garden State newsmen, and celebrities from WNBC Radio and ABC TV including some or the Stars of All My Children. That score was 18-8 in favor of the Carpenters. They accepted the challenge from another team for second game, winning by one point 13-12. This time they played the theater crew and local Sheriff's Deputies. All games were once again played for the benefit or the Cancer Society, and were acknowledged with letters, certificates or trophies.

The Summer tour was the most extensive & exhausting one they'd ever had, dating from April 3 to September 3. In Toronto they did 5 shows in 3 days which left no time for sightseeing or shopping. Cubby turned another year older in Cuyahoga Falls, so they bought him a birthday cake, then found he was on diet and couldn't indulge! He exercised extreme will power.

In Pine Knob, Michigan they managed to spend some time with old buddy Wes Jacobs who was part of the Carpenter trio back in '65 and '66. Wes played bass with them when they won so many trophies in the Hollywood Bowl "Battle of The Bands". He still plays tuba with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

After their Erie, Pennsylvania gig, they went (the same night) to Wallingford, Connecticut, and got lost from the airport to their hotel. John Bettis, the other half of the Carpenter/Bettis song writing team, joined them there, and all enjoyed visiting relatives and old friends. Mrs. Catello Cuticello, the former Debbie Vaiuso, a New Haven schoolmate and close friend of Karen, invited them to dinner where they thoroughly enjoyed good old fashioned, home cooked Italian meal.

Another old friend, Jim Anthony also paid them visit. Jim was drummer for the Carpenters several years ago. Karen enjoyed shopping spree with New Haven friends, patronizing some of the stores she remembered from her childhood days.

In Warwick, the 105 degrees temperature climbed to 121 degrees on stage, and by the time the gig ended, they were all drenched in their own perspiration.

They were delighted with Newport, which Karen described as a 'cute' town. Their hotel was located short distance from where Jaws had been filmed.

August 2nd was "Bear's" birthday, as well as the 2nd wedding anniversary of Pete and Lenny Henderson, so the gang surprised the three of them with party. Cubby & Richard did the driving here in two identical rental cars, and one night, Cubby unknowingly drove off in Richard's car. Cubby's car key happened to fit Richard's car, but unfortunately Richard's key didn't fit Cubby's car, so once again Richard was stranded. This time he rented one of the hotel's limos and did his own driving to the Warwick gig.

While performing in Columbia, Maryland, they were houseguests of their Aunt and Uncle, Mr. & Mrs., Paul Rudolph and family.

In Maryland, they always look forward to a crab feast, and this time they enjoyed one at Gordons Seafood restaurant, where they later did some impromptu entertaining, much to the delight of the manager and other diners.

The Astor Tower was home to them during their Chicago engagement at the Lavinia. Karen described the gig as 'weird' because they couldn't see the 10,000 people in the audience seated on the lawn.

The Captain & Tenille attended one of their performances, and Richard and Karen returned the compliment by attending one or their shows while in Chicago. They also saw Gino Vanelli at "Mr. Kelly's".

After Chicago, they were to have six day breather before opening in Las Vegas, so, with the biggest part of the tour behind them, they boarded the jet for the happy flight home.

We're all trying to get Karen well enough now for their European tour. Hope to have much better news of her next time. Rap again. EV.

Carpenters Fan Club Newsletter #46 - December, 1975

Hi Fan:

In response to the overwhelming concern regarding Karen's health, I am happy to confirm she has responded well to the rest and medication prescribed by her doctors, and is steadily regaining weight, (present reading 104 lbs.) The good wishes of so many loyal fans, combined with our beautiful California weather, have been the main contributory factors to her recuperation. Karen has asked me to convey her heartfelt gratitude to you all for the get-well cards, and numerous kind messages, which have brought her so much pleasure and comfort.

Contrary to unfounded reports you may have read in various magazines, please be assured there is no truth in the rumor that Karen is a victim of cancer. Coupled with severe physical and mental exhaustion, due to overwork, dieting and lack of rest, she developed Colitis (i.e. inflammation of the colon.) Her collapse was inevitable after the rigorous schedule of the past summer months, and her willing spirit was eventually dominated by mother nature who compelled her to take a well deserved rest. Thank God she exudes her vivacious, happy personality once again. We are indeed thankful that Richard has managed to sustain sufficient stamina to withstand the extra pressures derived from Karen's illness.

It was with deep regret that the European tour was canceled on doctor's advice, specially having been honored to be selected to perform in the presence of the Queen at the Royal Command Variety Performance in London. Richard flew to London with John Bettis to apologize to the fans and promoters for the cancellation, via the media of television, radio and newspapers. (A gesture held in high esteem by the thousands of disappointed fans from all the countries affected.)

The Japanese tour has been rescheduled to commence March 15th, 1976.

At time of writing, I have no date to confirm for the European tour, but it is anticipated to be some time in the fall of 1976.

Needless to say, Richard has wasted no time during Karen's recuperation period. He and John Bettis have been working on some new material, and I am delighted to report that a new single is in the making, and a new album is expected to be released some time in the Spring. No title for either is evident yet, but I will keep you updated on same.

Karen and Richard's dearest wish is to produce a Christmas album, as Christmas has a very special meaning to them. Alas, time has not permitted them to realize their ambition this year, but "we can dream can't we" until next year:

To all 9-5 workers: I suggest you sneak your portable t.v. to work, and tune in to Dinah Shore's afternoon program where you will find a 90 minute tribute to none other than The Carpenters. The tentative date is set for January 19, 1976, but please check your t.v. guide for confirmation.

Karen and Richard are busy preparing a completely new show for their act, and discussing the 1976 schedule under the guidance of Terry Ellis who is helping them for the time being. They are also planning possible t.v. shows, and should they transpire, some of the U.S. tours would be automatically curtailed. Karen's health must take first priority in this deciding factor. The Sahara/Tahoe shows are to be started, as previously planned, for December 27, 1975 through January 14, 1976 with the exception of News Year's Eve.

Karen and Richard enjoyed a very happy Thanksgiving which was extra special for them this year, being the first time they were able to celebrate it at home with their family and friends since the beginning of their career. Mom cooked a huge turkey with all the trimmings, and a good time was had by all.

Richard's birthday was also a significant occasion. You will remember that his Lincoln Continental was stolen some months back. Recently, without his knowledge, a notification arrived in the mail advising that it had been found and could be claimed via the usual channels. Mom and Dad's immediate reaction was one of hesitancy. They feared it would have been stripped beyond recognition. Upon reflection, knowing how Richard had felt about losing his 'pride and joy', they decided to have it in working order for his birthday. They were pleasantly surprised to find the car in much better condition than they had anticipated. A few minor details were corrected, and the stolen wheels replaced. It was then surreptitiously delivered to the garage of the Carpenters home to await it's rightful owner. It was a superb day near 90 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. Finally the moment had arrived. Richard came to visit his family and join them for dinner later. By this time, Mom, Dad and a few close friends had gathered inside the garage, whilst Karen escorted him in the same direction, handing him the 'key of the door". As you can imagine, his face was a picture, a mixture of amazement, intrigue and excitement. He walked around the car at least six times, examining various details, when he suddenly realized it was his original car. He was ecstatic and embraced the 'grand old lady' like a long lost friend. It was a very emotional moment, and his family derived so much pleasure from his reaction. He was enthralled and completely overwhelmed. The dinner party was a grand finale to a perfect day. He and Dad wish to convey their very grateful thanks for all the lovely cards, and a special vote of thanks for the extra effort, time and thought behind those hand-made cards.

For those interested in obtaining Carpenters Albums from Japan, a fan kindly supplied the following information. Personal checks and cashiers checks in U.S. currency will be accepted by King Record Co., Tokyo, Japan. Carpenters Golden Prize" (vol.1), Carpenters Golden Prize"(vol.2), Carpenters Live In Japan. The latter is a double album.

I would like to remind all fans that they do not have to pay any further membership dues once they have joined our fan club.

I have to advise you that Mr. Sherwin Bash is no longer employed as Manager for the Carpenters. Over the past few years, Richard and Karen have experienced conflicting opinions regarding management philosophy. In view of this, and to avoid undue friction, they agreed to sever business connections on amicable terms.

I am very pleased to report that Tony "Happy" Peluso is making satisfactory progress from a broken leg he sustained in a recent motorbike accident.

As Christmas draws near, the Carpenters home looks magnificent in all it's festive glory, specially the illuminated exterior. Once again Frank has spent countless hours decorating the interior also paying meticulous attention to synchronizing lights etc. His efforts are well rewarded judging by the adulation of passers by. Truly a picturesque work of art. Karen, Richard, Mom and Dad, will be joined by their family from back east for the Holidays. They, the group, fanclub staff and your truly, extend warm wishes to you all for a very Happy, Peaceful and Safe Christmas, and thank you for your continued interest and support.

Rap next year. EV
