FAN CLUB NEWSLETTERS 1980
Carpenters Fan Club Newsletter #66 - January, 1980
Greetings Friends!
The Carpenter family wish to convey their warmest thanks for all the beautiful cards and gifts, and hope you all enjoyed the Holidays with your families and friends.
Our local radio stations provided us with many happy listening hours of Christmas Portrait music over the festive season.
Karen has made several return trips to New York in connection with her recordings, and we can anticipate release of her solo album sometime in March. She is in New York now, working on the final segments, but until completion stage it cannot be determined which track will be chosen for the initial single release, so watch for it soon.
Richard and Karen recently participated in the popular TV show 20/20 with Herb Alpert, which is due to air shortly, but no date is set at present time.
You will be happy to know tentative plans are in the making for a Carpenters Special some time in the Spring. Taping is scheduled to begin next month, but there is no information on the theme or guests as this letter goes to press.
Showing signs of having benefited greatly from his overdue hiatus, Richard plans on returning to the studios with Karen when she returns from New York, to resume work on their next album which will embrace some of the music they will feature in their Special.
Richard recently made two different type records! He's thoroughly enjoyed being involved with his cars and attending car auctions. Over the Thanksgiving weekend he paid a record price for a 1966 Mustang Convertible, and sold his 1959 Chrysler 300 for a record price.
Regarding the information I conveyed to you in the #65 newsletter pertaining to the Japanese LP The Carpenters First Ten Years, Alfa Records have since advised me of an error on the price. This should have been Y4,800 NOT Y4,500 plus Y5,000 for shipping etc. They wish to apologize for any inconvenience incurred by the error, but those who ordered would be wise to send the balance of Y300 promptly to ensure delivery of same.
Alfa Records have also compiled two new Carpenters releases which may interest you collectors. Both albums are entitled Sound Capsule Carpenters Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. Price for each recording is Y2,500 plus Y2,800 for shipping and handling.
Indicative of the appreciation of the Singles 1974-1978 released in England last year, it has already achieved Platinum status!
Many hours of preparation and research has finally culminated in a very nice souvenir book (now in mailing process) as a token of gratitude from the Carpenters for your faithful support during the first decade of their recording career. Enjoy!
These books will not be sold outside the fanclub, so anyone who wishes further copies for friends, can obtain them from the fanclub for $X.XX for USA members, and $X.XX for members residing outside the States. The price includes shipping and handling.
The Carpenter homestead in Downey is an annual spectacle as the Holiday Season approaches, but this year was even more spectacular with the addition of a life-size Snoopy positioned on the red carpeted porch accompanying an enormous frosty reindeer (complete with gift wrapped packages) suspended over the porch railings. Dad Carpenter who supervises the decorating was awarded first prize in the form of a plaque presented by Chaney Realtors for the "Gallery Of Homes Christmas Decoration Contest". The usual stream of visitors filed past to view the magnificent sight.
As I have no further news just now, I'll include the answers to some of your questions:
Q. Does Karen hope for better promotion for her solo LP than previous Carpenters releases of recent years, and will she do a promo tour?
A. There is a possibility Karen might do a short promo tour. She feels A & M are behind them, and she and Richard feel very proud of being selected American Top 40's #1 Recording Duo of the past decade.
Q. Have Karen and Richard ever met Barbra Streisand?
A. Yes, many times.
Q. How many cars does Karen have now?
A. Three: 1956 Thunderbird Convertible, 1972 Mercedes, 1979 Jaguar XJS.
Q. On which tracks did Karen play drums on the Horizon album?
A. Please Mr. Postman and Happy.
Q. Did Karen and Richard see Grease, did they like it, and would they ever consider participating in a similar type film?
A. They both saw it, enjoyed it and would consider such a venture if the opportunity arose.
Q. Is Karen going to appear on Loveboat or Fantasy Island?
A. She is interested in appearing if a suitable script is offered.
Q. Is it possible K & R might do a USA Singles 1974-1978 release?
A. They have no plans for this at the present time.
Q. Did Karen visit Studio 54 while in New York?
A. She was invited, but had to decline due to pressure of work.
Q. Will the Carpenters be touring in 1980?
A. There is a slight possibility, but no concrete plans at present.
The Carpenters Christmas Portrait album cover was reproduced for their personalized Christmas cards this year. As their hand written message inside the card was so meaningful, one was mailed to our hostages in Iran. To reflect their message seems a fitting conclusion to this letter: "For a warm and full season, we send you our wishes for Peace among men, and Love throughout the world". Karen & Richard.
Everyone connected with our duo warmly endorses their message.
Happy New Year! Rosina.

Carpenters Fan Club Newsletter #67 - May, 1980
Hello Friends!
I regret the absence of news since the previous newsletter, due to the fact it has taken about two months for Richard and Karen to prepare their television Special just recently aired.
After much thought, Karen has decided not to release a solo album. Scheduling difficulties between producer and artist has resulted in the album still not being completed. Finishing the project would delay the Carpenters new album and next Special, both of which the duo is delighted to be working on.
As you will have noticed from the Special, Richard is in great form and "raring to go" with his music again! Their studio sessions and work on the next Special later this year, will keep them fully occupied for some time.
Mom and Dad enjoyed their 45th wedding anniversary celebration with family and close friends at their favorite seafood restaurant. Bouquets galore were indeed a magnificent spectacle at the family homestead, and the numerous congratulatory tributes seemed so appropriate for such a rare feat in today's society.
Dad has not been feeling too well lately, after sustaining wrist and arm fractures when he fell from a step-ladder at home. It has been very painful, but is responding to treatment now.
I relate with sadness the loss of two faithful canine friends. The family's German shepherd Lady, after a long period of deteriorating health and Ev's cockerpoo Buttons, succumbed to old age recently. Both pets had reached the ripe old age of fifteen, which compares to a hundred and five in the life of a human. Mush is recovering from the loss of her companion thanks to the extra attention she's enjoying. Ev's grief was evaporated into joy with the acquisition of an adorable Lhasa Apso puppy she has named Muffy.
Richard and Karen have enjoyed reading many of your enthusiastic letters of support and appreciation for their anniversary gift book. Thank you on their behalf.
Richard has been very involved with one of his favorite hobbies, preparing a number of his classic cars for auction. He also purchased two 1980 Mustangs.
A REMINDER: Please remember to write your address on the outside of your envelope when mailing letters to the fan club. Failure to do this may result in your letter being directed to the 'dead letter' office, and may never reach us.
Your cooperation in giving your previous address also when advising us of your change of address, would eliminate time in file searching, and would be much appreciated, thank you.
I have a few questions I'll be happy to answer now:
Q. Since Sweet, Sweet Smile was a successful hit single on the Country charts, has A & M Records released it on their "Forget Me Nots" series?
A. Not up to the present time.
Q. Are there any domestic or overseas Carpenters tours scheduled for the current year?
A. Unfortunately no. They will be committed to making more music.
Q. On what tracks of the following albums did Karen play drums; Close To You , Carpenters, A Song For You, Now And Then?
A. Close To You - Love Is Surrender, Mr. Guder, Another Song, I'll Never Fall In Love Again.
Carpenters - Bacharach/David Medley.
A Song For You - Flat Baroque.
Now And Then - Every track except Jambalaya.
Q. Has progress been made on a Carpenters LP?
A. Yes.
Q. Did Karen and Richard attend the premiere of the film Bless The Beasts And The Children?
A. No, they did not attend the premiere, but did attend a screening of same in New York.
Q. Will the Carpenters appear on the "Tonight" show soon?
A. They have no plans to appear in the immediate future.
Q. Have Richard and Karen seen the stage show Evita, and the film The Rose, and what were their reactions?
A. Richard did not see either, but Karen saw The Rose and said she enjoyed it.
Q. Did Richard enjoy Monty Python's Life of Brian?
A. Yes, he enjoys all Monty Python's work.
Q. Other than the award for "Best Group" in the 1974 American Music Awards, have the Carpenters been nominated or received any other American Music Awards?
A. No.
Q. Have the Carpenters ever met Lucille Ball?
A. Yes. They have also met Desi Jr. and Lucie.
Q. Will new pictures be available from the Carpenters latest Special?
A. Yes, we expect to have a set available very soon now.
Richard and Karen greatly enjoyed participating in the Disneyland 25th anniversary celebrations recently, and received a warm welcome from Mickey and friends, as featured in the May 6th issue of The Star.
We have appreciated your cooperation in enclosing stamped envelope and International Reply Coupons with your many questions, but we regret we can no longer continue this service, except for a limited amount of reasonable questions which will be selected for publication in future "question and answer" segments of future newsletters, so please, no more stamped addressed envelopes, thank you.
Everyone connected with the Carpenters wishes you all a very happy and safe summer, and extends congratulations to all graduates.
Until next time, take care, Rosina.

A VERY SPECIAL BULLETIN! July, 1980
Dear Friends,
I couldn't be more proud and excited to share the following wonders news with you all:
"Mr. & Mrs. Harold Carpenter of Downey, California are very happy to announce the forthcoming marriage of their only daughter KAREN ANNE to THOMAS JAMES BURRIS, eldest son of Mr. & Mrs. James Burris of Orange County California on Sunday, August 31st. 1980 in Beverly Hills, California."
Tom is a very handsome, blue eyed blond business executive whose charm and down to earth character is a perfect match for Karen's vibrant magnetic personality.
Elaborate arrangements are in progress for what promises to be the Society Wedding Of The Decade!
As emotions run high, and excitement reaches fever pitch, the hearing strings take an extra tug as we learn of Richard's intention to compose a very personal message for the bride to sing to her bridegroom during the marriage ceremony. Richard will also play piano selections throughout the service, including We've Only Just Begun and Close To You, What a poignant moment that will be.
The marriage will be performed in an Olde English style garden setting and Karen will be attended by a matron-of-honor and ten bridesmaids. One of the two little flower girls (Ashley) and her twin brother (Andrew) will be ring-bearer, are Karen's 5 year old God-children. The other little flower girl (Brooke) is their 5 year old cousin. Tom's younger brother Richard will be Best Man, and of course the bride will be given away by her father.
Prominent Beverly Hills designer Bill Belew has been assigned the prestigious task of designing the bride's gown, and will be responsible for the attire of the bridal entourage.
I will endeavor to give a full description of the wedding in the next newsletter, but in the meantime, I know you will all endorse our warmest congratulations to our very special couple, and wish then God's blessing for a lifetime of profound happiness, understanding and blissful harmony.
And now, an extra bonus to complete our summer happiness! IF TIME ALLOWS, Richard and Karen intend to release a new single this summer, will precedes the eagerly awaited Carpenters album set for release later in year. As this letter goes to press, the decision on choice of single has not been finalized, so you can check your record outlets and have a great surprise!
Here is the information many of you have requested regarding the next pictures from the recent TV Special:

Carpenters Fan Club Newsletter #68 - October, 1980
Hi Friends!
To correct the "misquotes" you may have read in various Press descriptions of Karen's marriage to Tom Burris, the following is an accurate report from a guest who attended that momentous occasion!
August 31st 1980, was a very warm, brilliantly sunny day, and our hearts were filled with a matching warmth as we were about to witness the marriage ceremony of a very special couple.
As the four hundred and fifty four guests were ushered to their seats in the Crystal Room of the exclusive Beverly Hills Hotel in California, the delicate strains of organ music played, and the atmosphere felt as sacred as any wedding chapel or church.
The magnificent decor was specially designed to simulate a 1950's wedding in an olde English garden setting. Every window and pillar in the room was covered with silver foil-backed trellises, interwoven with white orchids, gardenias, violets and lemon leaves. Huge baskets of orchids were suspended from the ceiling, and another trellis heavily laden with purple stocks(to simulate wisteria)and lemon leaves, was positioned above the custom built altar, framing the bridal party.
Prior to the service, Richard appeared in gray morning coat to take his position at the piano, where he accompanied the 40 piece Tom Bahior Chorale, as well as Earl Dumler on oboe, and Gayle Levant on harp. The renowned English orchestra leader Peter Knight flew from his home to make his contribution to the music for Karen's wedding, and conducted the choir. As the maestro and choir float serenely into a medley of Carpenters hits and other love ballads as only Richard can articulate with his superb arrangements, it was difficult to keep a dry eye!
Dr. Robert Schuller, Pastor of Garden Grove Community Church, and frequent preacher on televised services, officiated at the wedding ceremony. He escorted the very handsome groom and his best man (brother Richard) to the altar.
The bridegroom's parents headed the bridal procession, Mrs. Burris looking very elegant in a pale green chiffon gown with a matching lace re-embroidered jacket, and a matching picture hat trimmed with pale green silk gardenias.
Richard left the piano for a few moments to escort his mother down the aisle. Mrs. Carpenter looked equally elegant and happy, wearing a gray satin stripe over lavender chiffon gown, trimmed with lavender lace embroidery at the neckline and cuffs. Her picture hat consisted of lavender chiffon with lavender posies of forget-me-nots.
As the music faded out, a momentary pause, then Karen's crystal clear voice conveyed her personal message to her bridegroom with an awesome recording entitled Because We Are In Love. Richard composed and arranged this masterpiece in commemoration of Karen's wedding, in coordination with his longtime writing partner John Bettis who wrote the lyrics. What a moving moment to precede the nuptials.
The bridal path (aisle) was lined with custom built white gardenia topiary trees, and large woven baskets of pink chrysanthemums, making a perfect setting for the bridal procession as the tiny flower girls scattered the petals dutifully. Their charming Victorian style gowns of white Swiss embroidered cotton were bloused at the hips with white silk taffe sashes. Their hose and patent leather shoes were also, white, and their purple straw hats were ringed with lace and violets. The smaller flower girl's twin brother (Karen's godchildren) was the ring bearer. Looking adorable in a white satin knickerbockers outfit with lace ruffles and white silk cummerbund, white hose and patent leather shoes, carrying the unique ring pillow. This was specially created by designer Bill Belew, who used remnants of material from all the gowns he had made for Karen over the years for her many televised Carpenters performances.
The procession of ten bridesmaids, each on the arm of a morning coated usher, followed by the matron-of-honor was a picturesque scene. Their waltz length gowns of lavender chiffon over crepe-de-chine slips featured double tiered cape sleeves and sweetheart necklines. Their waistlines were accentuated with emerald green sashes adorned with a posy of lavender silk violets, and each carried a sheaf of deep purple dendrobin orchids, tied with emerald green satin bows.
Now the moment we had all been waiting for. As the opening chords of The Bridal March warned us of the imminent appearance of the bride all heads turned as Karen emerged on the arm of her proud father, looking absolutely exquisite and radiantly happy.
Her gown was modeled after an 18th. century riding ensemble. Made of white mausseline-de-soie, the long sleeved jacketed gown with a long train featured a floral design of iridescent seashells and sequins. Fifteen yards of material were used for this work of art! The bride's silk elusion veil cascaded from a white chiffon detachable brimmed picture hat, fashioned with a Juliet cap crown embroidered with sequin-studded flowers. Lilies-of-the-valley was Karen's choice for the bouquet she carried, interwoven with wired loops and streamers of tiny white pikaki petals which gave a lace effect.
As the Bride met her Groom at the altar, both smiled broadly and the service began. After Richard sang a very moving version of The Wedding Prayer, and the couple exchanged marriage vows (loud and clear!) and they exchanged rings the pastor proclaimed Tom and Karen "Husband and Wife" at the completion of the service.
All eyes were glued on the happy couple as they returned down the aisle. While Tom and Karen held a Press Conference and posed for cameras, the guests were served cocktails as they mingled in the Maisonette Room. It was fun meeting, so many celebrities. The guests later returned to the Crystal Room for the wedding luncheon.
Each table was elegantly decorated with lavender linen tablecloths covered with white lace and matching napkins. The mirrored centerpieces, fashioned to simulate a lake with crystal swans bearing a stem of purple orchids, were "floating" atop the mirrors. Amidst the swans were elaborate arrangements of alba lilies and African violets, and white chocolate woven baskets of lavender chocolate flowers and silver almonds.
The menu consisted of limestone lettuce salad with shrimps, breast of chicken chasseur sous cloche (under glass), broccoli polonaise, rice pilaf, Chablis wine, strawberries Romanoff with bisquit fans and coffee. During the luncheon a toast "To The Bride And Groom" was proposed by the head usher Lt. Governor of California Mike Curb.
The spacious dance floor and music of the Michael Paige Big Band invited the newly weds to lead off the first dance to the accompaniment of... you guessed right! We've Only Just Begun. As the guests joined in the dancing, the atmosphere became steeped in nostalgia.
Later on the spectacular 4 tiered wedding cake was wheeled into view of everyone in the center of the dance floor, and while cameras clicked furiously, the couple cut the first slice. It was a delicious mixture of chocolate and mocha filling, covered with white fondant icing, scalloped edging highlighted with lemon colored iced decorations, wedding bells and lilies-of-the-valley. The top tier displayed the traditional figures of a bride and groom embraced by two interwoven lace trimmed hearts.
Before the bride and groom left the ballroom to prepare for their honeymoon departure, Karen tossed her bouquet into the crowd of single female guests and was retrieved coincidentally by her good friend Olivia Newton-John. Her garter was caught by a "non-celebrity" young bachelor.
So ended an unforgettable wedding. Indeed royalty could not have staged a better production!
Karen chose a dusty rose silk linen two piece outfit for her going away ensemble. The dress was cut on the bias and featured a sweetheart neckline and peblum jacket complemented by a beige silk straw hat offset with pink lilacs, beige kid gloves and bag, and dusty rose shoes.
The newly weds spent a few days in Mexico before flying on to the South Pacific island of Bora Bora for ten days. They are presently residing in Beverly Hills and hope to build a new home in the future.
Another colorful event preceding the wedding was a shower given for Karen by her matron-of-honor Frenda Leffler and bridesmaid Carole Scott (sister of Mike Curb). It was Carole who initially introduced Tom and Karen to each other.
The shower was held at the exclusive Hillcrest Country Club where about fifty guests enjoyed an elegant lunch, and the opportunity to "Shower Karen with love and affection". Karen looked superb in a two piece outfit of daffodil yellow organza with white daisies appliquéd on the skirt, spaghetti straps, matching daisies on the jacket shoulders as a yellow silk straw hat trimmed with white daisies. Yellow bag and shoes completed yet another Bill Belew creation.
The color scheme was lavender and peach which included orchids flown from Hawaii for the occasion. Karen was certainly showered with loads beautiful gifts, but admitted feeling more nervous at her bridal shower than any Carpenters concert!
Actually she never looked happier, except course on her wedding day. Celebrities at the shower included the Bee Gee's mother and sister, Dareth Newley, Olivia Newton-John, Mrs. Mike Curb, Mrs. Jerry Weintraub, Mrs. Herb Alpert and of course the mothers of the engaged couple.
